Red Bull Romaniacs Everything you need to know

Everything you need to know about Red Bull Romaniacs

Red Bull Romaniacs 2021 Finisher – here’s the full behind the scenes low down & lots of info you might not know on the vertical madness

I did it!!! I’m officially a Red Bull Romaniacs finisher…or should I say survivor? That was epic. I loved every second of it. Here is my behind the scenes low down on the whole event. I hope it enables you to learn a little more about how Romaniacs runs and some of the behind the scenes fun of becoming a Romaniacs finisher!

There is a lot to know about Romaniacs so I hope you enjoy. Let me know in the video comments:

My body…saying I’m proud of it would be an understatement. While I did have to push through some pain management for my hip it held up. Each morning, with good nutrition overnight, as much shut eye as possible, Compex deep tissue support and active collagen, my body felt ready for the day ahead [discounts below]. Day four was the biggest mind game for me as the hip pain was more intense but I wasn’t going to let it hold me back. See why this was so tough for me with my accident story here:

I used all the Jarvis tips learned the week before and I just focused on riding smoothly and consistently. I had very few falls but definitely a few heart skipping a beat moments of fear (particularly on the ridiculous finish line crowd pleasing obstacles 😱).

I wasn’t fast but I’m insanely delighted to say I actually ranked!! 57th place of 91 riders with a total riding time of 18h23m20s following the Garmin GPS route of vertical madness!

Time to plot a new ridiculous challenge 🤪

Red Bull Romaniacs topics covered in this video:

  • Different classes available
  • Qualifier time trial
  • Sign on
  • Event format with paddock and race days
  • Garmin navigation set up with eTrex 22x and eTrex 32x
  • Food and race nutrition
  • My make up for off road riding
  • Hydration and Leatt mouth piece
  • Bivouac marathon stage setup, tent hire and packing
  • Bike hygiene
  • Fuel stops in the mountains
  • Health with my reconstructed hip
  • Finish line madness

Romaniacs finisher 💪🏼

Please note that due to Red Bull Media licencing there is no race footage in this video – they send me a legal threat if I recorded anything – all riding footage was captures on ‘similar’ terrain the week before with Jarvis Signature Tours Romania.

For more information on details shared in the video:

Here’s more on how I trained for Red Bull Romaniacs the week before with Jarvis Signature Tours Romania:

Strata Florida – the UK’s best green lane

Strata Florida – the UK’s best green lane

With over 9 river crossings the Strata Florida is a very fun legal byway in Wales. It’s wide enough for big 4x4s but also great fun on two wheels. But be warned…it is a wet ride! Both with a lot of puddles and standing water that tend to been murky with hidden rocks, and also from the many rivers, it can be a sporty ride – making it my best green lane. This was a day riding with two friends, I was on the Honda Africa Twin along with Alex my husband, and then Nick was on a Tenere 700 – all three ADV bikes are largely standard with the addition of some extra protection bars / plates. We were also running 50:50 road to off road tyres, so nothing fancy. We’d had a few dry days so the water was manageable on the big ADV bikes but certainly some hairy deep parts, with 9 river crossings the Strata Florida is not one for after heavy rain.

This is quite possibly… one of my favourite byway green lanes in the UK.

I hope you enjoy watching.

Here is the GPS route for the ride that I call the best green lane in the UK https://www.outdooractive.com/en/route/hiking-route/strata-florida-nick-and-vanessa/216659270/?share=%7Ezqdfsfzp%244osgopjn

Graham Jarvis car jump with The Girl On A Bike at ABR Festival

When Graham Jarvis asks you if you want to do a “Graham Jarvis teaches The Girl On A Bike to ride over a car”…to which I say yes like an excited kid at Christmas….and then see the car 😵

Vanessa Ruck with Graham Jarvis jumping a car

Yup…that’s me on a car…on a bike.. Totally normal 🤪… There’s nothing more confidence inspiring than the number 1 world hard enduro rider saying “I’ve seen you ride, you’ve got this” in relation to jumping over a car…The fact I’m posting kind of gives away that I didn’t die…but it definitely got the heart racing.

Here’s the action captured at Adventure Bike Festival with Graham Jarvis himself:

Graham Jarvis, the legend Extreme Enduro rider and probably the first name that comes to most riders’ minds when they think of the crème de le crème of enduro talent. I was excited to meet him at ABR Festival having already been on one of his Jarvis Signature Tours in Spain – see that here:

This video is Graham giving me some tuition, showing me the art of drops offs and then how to ride over a Ford Mondeo in hard enduro style. This seriously got my heart racing! The progression in my riding when I ride with the Jarvis crew is epic. I highly recommend

It’s also getting better…the legend has started a series of Jarvis Signature Tours, with the first a new one in Wales too – video coming soon!

2021 Harley-Davidson Pan America First Ride Off Road Review

2021 Harley-Davidson Pan America First Ride Off Road Review

Can a  @Harley-Davidson  Pan America go off road? The killer question and I was on a mission to answer it on my first ride doing a Pan America review. We rode for a day in north Wales on some gorgeous twisty roads with an off road leg tackling gravel, lose stones, hills, whoops and lots of puddles. Here’s my review:

With a all new V-twin 1252cc engine kicking out 150hp the Pan America has some epic thrills to be had but as an off road capable bike it also needs to be able to handle slower riding, aiding the rider to balance with a solid position, support arm fatigue with a slip assist clutch and hold its weight nicely. Bingo, we started the experience with my first ever ride, first pull away during a slow riding challenge… and I could immediately feel how comfortable and controllable the beast was. The weight of the V-twin is low and central and with a system of internal counter balance systems, the engine is smooth and vibration free. Initial reaction – it felt amazing. Watch to see who won – Charley Boorman was riding too.

Check out the full video for my thoughts but here are some highlights, particularly thinking H-D stereotypes…

  1. Power is on form. Smooth low-end torque & low-speed throttle response for technical off road…see previous slow riding challenge…but with 150hp it’s got fist fulls of top end power for the open road
  2. It’s smooth, absolutely smashing the vibration reputation out the window. It’s no “tractor” but it does still have a lovely growl
  3. Riding modes bring a hugely contrasting ride. I personally wasn’t a fan of road mode, it felt a little washy but sport mode with stiffened up suspension – oh hello!
  4. The ‘magic’ suspension was mint, aka Automatic Ride Height, it’s far more seamless than I expected too. You don’t feel it. It calculates the rider’s weight & adjusts the preload while you ride, then as you stop it lowers to reduce the seat height. Ace for the short riders
  5. Oh & this Harley can stop! With Brembo linked braking power you have the confidence putting the power down! Sharp 💪🏼
  6. The riding position is balanced, comfortable & I felt connected to be bike. Good knee grip for the mud & relaxed seat for roads
  7. Final surprise…it’s not that heavy! It’s a manageable HOG. With the V-twin low & weight conscious design the Pan America weights 245kg with a low centre of balance, massively helping confidence
the girl on a bike harley davidson pan america first ride off road 3
Harley-Davidson Pan America first ride off road

Being honest, it took me a little to be used to the Pan America. It’s a unique ride but after turning to the mud I found its spark! It CAN handle off road. Puddles, whoopy banks, mud & stones. Sucked up with confidence

It’s defo a bold leap of faith into the adventure world but I feel H-D have earned their ADV badge

Thumbs up from me! 🔥 Bring on a big Pan America adventure! Who’s going to try and who thinks the Pan will do well?

For reference I’m a female rider 169cm tall with 69cm inside leg.

The Ultimate International Travel Checklist

The Ultimate International Travel Checklist

the girl on a bike international travel
Ultimate international travel checklist

Many countries are finally opening up their borders and allowing travel after more than a year of strict restrictions. So, like most of us travelers, you’re itching to hop on a plane or sit on your bike to explore the world. However, if you’re planning to leave your country, you need to pack well no matter how long you’re staying abroad. Here is what you’ll need on your trip:

Check your passport and visa

Don’t even start planning your international trip without a passport. Check whether is up to date and doesn’t expire during your trip. Also, look up visa requirements for your destination. Most visas today can be acquired electronically, but sometimes you need to mail in your passport to get it printed. Do these things in advance to have everything ready and make plenty of copies of your electronic files and important documents.

Invest in travel insurance

You should never leave for a trip without travel insurance. In case you get sick or injured abroad, this document will give you the best care for less money. Picking a plan is not easy, so do your research and choose something that will fit your lifestyle and type of travel.

Do your research

Picking a destination is probably the hardest part of any trip since you have so many choices. When you book your trip, make sure to do your research on the destination by going through travel blogs and local information websites. If you need some inspiration, check out Big Booty Fish and what they say about different destinations and experiences you can have there. It’s always nice to get info from personal blogs since they offer the most sincere reviews.

Get a good travel bag

Depending on your travel style, your transportation and the length of the trip, you need to pick a good travel bag. While suitcases offer plenty of space, they are not the most practical when you need to go exploring. For that, you need an old-fashioned backpack. Today, these are made very light yet very spacious so you can basically have everything you need right on your back. If you prefer a rolling suitcase, get something extra sturdy since they are known for their wheels that give up or zippers that break.

Keep up with your hygiene routine

Just because you’re not at home, it doesn’t mean you can completely throw your beauty and hygiene routine out the window. While you can minimize your skincare routine, you will still need to properly cleanse and moisturize—you want to look good in your travel photos, don’t you? Also, don’t forget to pack sunscreen and all your regular hygiene products in convenient travel packages.

Don’t forget your reusable bottle

When traveling anywhere in the world, you need to be mindful of the waste and pollution you leave behind. Since traveling is already not the best for the environment, you need to reduce your waste by bringing your reusable water bottle. This will ensure you always have water with you without leaving a ton of plastic behind. If you’re hitting wilderness, a model with a built-in filter might be helpful.

Pack a universal adaptor

Traveling internationally can bring some less-expected issues like not being able to charge your devices due to a different electrical outlet. Luckily, you can buy an adaptor so you can charge away without issues. If you travel frequently, grab one of those universal travel adaptors so you can adjust to all outlet types wherever you go.

Traveling is super fun, but only when you pack and prepare appropriately. Luckily, you’ll be set with these tips and trips and have an amazing holiday full of adventure and exploration. And you’ll be able to do all that in comfort and safety.

Royal Enfield Himalayan first ride review with Superior Motorcycle Experiences

Royal Enfield Himalayan first ride review with Superior Motorcycle Experiences

This is a three day adventure putting the Himalayan through it’s paces in beautiful English countryside. It’s also my first ride experience on the Royal Enfield Himalayan and what better place than down in Dorset, UK with Superior Motorcycle Experiences. There were some rather random moments too, from an epic sausage tower for breakfast to cow fights and even a massive lick, to sheep herding and water crossings. The Himalayan’s proved to be fun, friendly and really manageable bikes with a low seat height, intimidating power and insanely comfortable seat. Please check out my two part mini adventure videos for the full fun:

For reference I’m a female rider 169cm tall with 69cm inside leg.

Part 1 Superior Motorcycle Experiences Royal Enfield Himalayan adventure:

Part 2 Himalayan adventure

My highlights

  • Super un-intimidating bikes – no the Himalayan is not a high performance machine but it has everything you need to have fun and enjoy the Dorset experience
  • Fantastic food – I love eating and with Superior Motorcycle Experiences you get some top notch grub! The Migrating Chef with his support van meets you mid ride for coffee, yummy snacks and pastries, and exquisite trail side lunches.
  • Any level rider could enjoy this day
  • Our accommodation in the Ollerod, Beanminster – WOW this was a lovely lovely hotel, incredible room, amazing friendly team and epic dinner. 5 star from me and I really hope to go back someday.
the girl on a bike olledrods hotel beanminster dorset uk 1
The Ollerod, possibly my favourite UK hotel

Any draw backs:

  • Instant coffee…it might sound picky but a fresh cafetiere with scrummy beans would be feasible from their kitted out van and would really add to the coffee stops over instant coffee. I’m a bit of a coffee lover!
  • Make sure you double check your feed requirements or you might get something listed anyway
  • You currently stay in hotels away from the bike HQ so have to drive back and forth BUT…soon they will have accommodation on site so that will be removed.

More on Super Motorcycle Experiences:

Superior Motorcycle Experiences offer luxurious motorcycle tours in Dorset, UK on Royal Enfield Himalayan motorcycles. The team is focused on giving the best experience, from stunning boutique accommodation, to full van support with road side coffees and high quality chef delivered lunches, but all while also having a blast on motorcycles. We did a 50/50 road to off road 3 day tour, including a trip to the beach. Trips start from £175 from a day’s training, through to full 3-4 day luxurious adventures. Consider it a UK mini adventure holiday suitable for all riding experiences, including novice.

I did the Dorset Trail Tour with Superior Motorcycle Experiences

This gives you a three day, off-road trail experience through Dorset’s spectacular landscapes surrounded in luxury.

Exploring the wonders of the Jurassic coast on motorcycles

Trip included:

  • Use of Royal Enfield Himalayan
  • Breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea from private chef
  • Guide, expert tuition and support rider
  • Followed by support vehicle (storage, emergency transport, refreshments)
  • Insurance
  • Inclusion in Chedington’s carbon off-set tree planting programme
  • Fuel
  • Mechanical support
  • Navigation and planning tuition session
  • 3 nights of accommodation
  • Photography and souvenir package

This is ideal for those from notice riders all the way to more experienced in off-road riders, and gives a really fun mini adventure experience. The tour format started with a clear briefing before some skill training to develop technique. I found this a really good refresher and reminder, but would also be ideal for a notice rider. We did exercises to help perfect the correct riding position, such as riding with one arm, some bike handing skills and the all important, how to pick up a bike training. The tour promises to enhance your skill set and confidence whilst exploring a stunning selection or terrain and obstacles in Dorset.

These multiple day package is tailored to provide a comfortable, fun and memorable off-road adventure holiday. Each day starts off from their specialised HQ in the heart of rural Dorset. After a hearty breakfast provided by our private chef [which was EPIC], each day will see us tackle a diverse range of on and off-road routes, providing variety, challenges, stunning scenery and plenty of hidden tracks and trails all over the South West. With scenic coffee-stops, a well-stocked support vehicle, carefully chosen hospitality locations and luxurious over-night accommodation; these packages are perfect for those who want to experience exhilaration and adventure, with plenty of home-comforts. They also offer all-female tours with our Ride leader Emily.

Women on Wheels: Iconic On-Screen Riders and their Motorcycles

Women on Wheels: Iconic On-Screen Riders and their Motorcycles

More often than not, people associate motorbikes with big, burly men clad in leather or denim jackets due to the existence of popular and controversial motorcycle clubs. However, in reality, men aren’t the only ones who make up famous bike groups — women do, too. Women also joined these groups as competent riders instead of passengers. They rode bikes in organisations such as the Motor Maids, which was established by Harley-Davidson Motor Company’s Arthur Davidson, as well as the US military unit Women’s Army Corps.

Nowadays, female biker clubs may not be as prevalent, but we can still see a lot of women charismatically riding big bikes — especially on-screen. That said, here are some of the most iconic on-screen female riders and their motorcycles.

Lara Croft in the 2001 Tomb Raider and her Yamaha TRX 850

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkWnwB1H4io

Before making it to the big screen, Lara Croft first debuted in an iconic game called Tomb Raider in 1994. She was played by Angelina Jolie back then in the first movie adaptation of the game in 2001. Swedish actress Alicia Vikander later on took over the role in the latest instalment of the movie franchise, but the character has also made her way to comic books and even TV series. It is because of all this that Foxy Games describes Lara Croft as an instantly recognisable heroine and one of the most pioneering female characters in video games. The character even holds a Guinness World Record for being the best-selling videogame heroin

She’s truly one of the groundbreaking female figures in video games, whether that’s in the original console titles or the many mini-games she’s inspired, like Secret of the Sword and Temples and Tombs. In the 2001 Tomb Raider movie, Lara Croft rides a Yamaha TRX 850 in the famous mansion shoot-out scene. The Yamaha TRX 850 was a sports bike built from 1996 to 2000. It has an 849cc parallel-twin engine that produces 79 horsepower. The TRX also boasts a top speed of 217 km/h and torque of 85 Nm.

Trinity in Matrix Reloaded and her Ducati 996

As one of the most influential sci-fi films of all time, the Matrix also gave birth to one of the coolest and most powerful female characters in the history of science fiction — Trinity. Trinity served as the force that guided Neo to his “salvation” and commanded him to rise up from his apparent death. Because of this, she was often considered as a character that can be paralleled with God.

In the second instalment of the popular movie franchise, Trinity, who was played by Carrie-Ann Moss, was a scene-stealer in the well-curated escape scene with her Ducati 996. The Ducati 996 is a superbike built between 1999 and 2002. It has a 996cc V-twin engine with 112 horsepower. With a fuel capacity of 17 litres, the Ducati 996’s top speed is 259 km/h and its torque is 93 Nm.

Max Guevara in Dark Angel and her Kawasaki ZZR 250

After talking about two action-packed films, we now move on to a television show that also featured a motor-riding heroine. The cyberpunk science fiction television show Dark Angel, which aired from 2000 to 2002, chronicles the life of Max Gueverra. Max Guevarra, who is played by Jessica Alba, is a runaway genetically enhanced super-soldier trying to lead a normal life and escape the government.

In the series, Max Guevarra rides a Kawasaki ZZR 250. The Kawasaki ZZR 250 is a sport-touring bike that was in production from 1990 to 2007. It has a twin-cylinder 250cc engine that has a maximum power of 40 horsepower and a maximum torque of 23 Nm. In 2013, Kawasaki ZZR 250 was renamed Ninja 250. From then on, it became one of the most popular entry-level sports bikes in the world.

Top tips to starting motorcycle mechanics

Top tips to starting motorcycle mechanics

As a home learned dabbling mechanic I know how intimidating getting started on bike maintenance can be. However, doing our own work on the bikes can be in every ones reach! Here is some of my thoughts on starting motorcycle mechanics, some tips on how to make it easier, where to start, and ultimately just giving it ago. I really hope this gives you a little more confidence to try working on your motorbike yourself.

These are of course some of my ideas on how to get started but I’d love to hear from you on your advice for others? Also, what was the first job you ever did on your bike?

You can see the full video on starting motorcycle mechanics on my YouTube:

A few things to think about

  1. Realising that it’s okay not to know it all but the first step in learning is trying
  2. Key benefit for me is money saving but even more so when you do your maintenance you start to understand your bike, learning how it works and so when you’re out on the trail or road and have a failure, you’re more likely to be able to fix it yourself road side and get home
  3. Identify the first task, such as
    • Oil change
    • Fuel filter
    • Wheel bearings
    • Chain cleaning
    • Air filter
  4. Find your bike manual and see what info it gives
  5. Do you research, get online and google it, find YouTube how tos, look for instructions on how to
  6. Make some notes as you go through the above and have them with you
  7. If you have a friend or loved one who knows how to do it, ask if they can supervise you [not essential]
  8. Give it a go, take it slow and follow the steps you’ve read

Tips

  • Keep your work surfaces clear and tidy. Organisation
  • Work out ahead what tools you might need, or might not have. Such as specialty clutch plate holding tool or torque values
  • Dedicated enough time to the task without distractions, less likely to forget a sequence or procedure.
  • Labels / making carboard frames for remembering where things go
  • Take photos of the process as you go so you can remember, such as wire looms and hoses, helps you appreciate / remember what they’re rooted through
  • Get into a good routine of washing your bike after a ride, gives you time to visually check your bike over and spot issue before they arise. Lose bolts, play in places it shouldn’t be, damage from the ride.

Remember, you have a few scenarios…but the bike maintenance needs doing, that’s a fact

  1. You pay a garage to do it – costs money
  2. You try yourself and fail, you take to a garage – cost money but you’ve learned something in the progress and no damage done – try again next time
  3. Do nothing…bike breaks – costs money
  4. You try yourself and success – saves money and you learn

Don’t be afraid to give it ago. You won’t learning it over night but it’s a journey.

If I can do it, you can do it.

If you’re new to my page – it’s more than just dirt bike riding and racing, I’m on a mission to prove that nothing is impossible if you want it bad enough. See more about my story plus read about my life changing accident, which started it all.
