  • LOOKING AHEAD TO AN EXCITING 2024, WITH FURTHER EVENTS AND CHALLENGES ADDED, AND THE LARGEST DEFENDER RALLY TEAM YET

The 2023 season of the Defender Rally Series saw the culmination of two rally championships; the UK Championship and the newly added International Baja Championship, across Europe.

The Bowler Driver Development Programme can take anyone from a rally novice through to experienced rally drivers, providing training, enhancing skills and taking them to incredible locations for racing events to develop their experience, and progressing their rally licences.

“2023 also saw us embark on phase two of our race and development programme for clients, with our first European BAJA series. Many of our 2022 clients successfully completed enough events to upgrade to an MSUK National status licence, enabling them to experience even bigger races in amazing locations for 2023, from rural France to the high plains of Spain and on again to Iceland. Covering over 400 km of stages per event, our teams and cars showed incredible capability with multiple class wins and top podium finishes.”

Bowler Works Driver, Vanessa Ruck, joined the Series at the start of 2023, with little to no rally car experience, but well known for her motorcycle off-road events, ended the year with multiple podium positions in the UK Championship and an upgraded rally licence.

Commenting on her journey with Bowler Motorsport,
“The Series has been mind-blowing. From feeling like a rabbit in headlights, to dancing in the car and winning 4 podium positions over 7 UK races, it’s been amazing. The experience and team have been incredible; not only have these experiences added to my driving database and skillset, I’ve made great friends across a brilliant group of people, driver teams and Bowler teams alike, all united across a love of motorsport. I’ve also completed the year’s requirements in the driver development programme, which means my rally licence is now upgraded to a National Licence, and this enables me to compete in endurance rally events abroad from next year, which is exciting! I’m really proud of the journey and how far I’ve come.”

The Defender-based series puts driver skill to the fore in identical cars, and the UK Championship included 7 gruelling rounds to test their skills. For the Year 2 seasoned Defender Rally Series drivers, they could also compete in the 5 awe-inspiring International Baja rounds, across Europe.

The Defender Rally Series continues to go evolve, with 2024 introducing new events and new driver teams, for a bigger-than-ever racing season.

Each championship has been carefully designed to enhance the challenge and adventure for our driver teams, with new racing events added to the Defender Rally Series for UK and International championships.

“The Defender Rally Series set out a clear three-year strategy for clients to be able to develop their cross-country motorsport skills and knowledge, in a manner that brings a huge amount of fun coupled with great close competition,” Dave Marsh explained, “2024 is the culmination of this motorsport journey, where those who have completed the previous seasons get to take on a Rally Raid event, to test all their skills and endurance over six days racing in the Balkan Rally. All the events we select for the full race programme are carefully chosen to develop all the skills crews will need in order to compete in these marathon events. Next year is no different, with a great variety of cross country and rally events to develop core skills for Year One candidates, and to increase the distances that our European BAJA series our year two teams will experience, to develop the endurance strategies and pace in our drivers. We also keep the championships fresh by rotating events year on year, so that at every level there is something to look forward to.”

The 2024 Baja Championship kicks off for Round 1 in February, followed by the UK Championship starting from March. Prior to this, further training and driver support days will be held, to refresh the driver teams and prepare them for the racing events.

Africa Eco Race The Girl on a Bike in the Media

Visor Down: Vanessa Ruck: “My goal is to not die in the desert…”

As seen in The Visor Down: Vanessa Ruck has become a well-known figure in the world of adventure biking, but her biggest challenge is to come: the Africa Eco Race

The Africa Eco Race is not the most famous rally in the world, but it does follow perhaps the most famous route, generally speaking, as it aims to replicate the original Paris-Dakar rally. Vanessa Ruck will be taking part in the AER for the first time in 2024.

It won’t be Ruck’s first attempt at a motorcycle rally. In fact, she’s becoming quite experienced in the discipline, having competed in the 1000 Dunas, Morocco Desert Challenge, and Tunisian Desert Challenge, to name a few.

The girl on a bike race end.jpg

But the Africa Eco Race is a tough challenge on Ruck’s horizon. “My goal is to not die in the desert, and make the finish line,” Ruck said with a laugh. I spoke with her back at the end of August at the Women in Moto Show in Uttoxeter. Even then, more than four months out from the beginning of the AER, she was “having nightmares about [it].”

But, despite the anxious fear of what is to come, the AER is an important rally to Ruck. “There’s a number of reasons why I’ve been attracted to the Africa Eco Race,” she said, “primarily, [it] is really the original route of the Dakar.”

The Paris-Dakar Rally no longer has anything to do with either Paris, the French capital, or the Senegalese capital of Dakar. Security concerns led to the rally’s cancellation in 2008, and in 2009 it left its original home and shifted to South America.

The girl on a bike 18

Since 2020, the ‘Dakar’ has been run in Saudi Arabia.
In comparison, the Africa Eco Race begins in Monaco, and runs stages through North Africa, into Senegal, and eventually to the finish in Dakar, making it quite similar to the original race.

The AER has “got a lot more to do with the heritage and the emotion of what we think about when we think of the Dakar,” Ruck says. “It’s 14 days, it’s 6,500km, it’s moving bivouacs, all the way down to Dakar.”

Ruck is not only a supporter of the AER’s concept, but also someone who does not seem to enjoy the concept of the modern Dakar. Not only the event itself but also the way it dominates the rally discipline.

Enduro News: Vanessa Ruck, Conquers New Desert Rally Challenge

As seen in The Enduro news: Follow Vanessa Ruck’s desert rally odyssey from Monaco to Senegal, conquering 6,500km for charity amid chronic pain struggles.

UK based racer, Vanessa Ruck, also known as ‘The Girl On A Bike,’ announces her entry into the Africa Eco Race, highlighting her journey and philanthropic endeavors. Vanessa has evolved from a roadbook rookie to a desert rally addict, completing eight international desert rallies and aiming for her most challenging race yet. Vanessa lives and manages chronic pain following a cycling road traffic accident in 2014, adding to the challenges she’ll face racing 6,500km to the infamous Dakar.

Desert Rally Challenge the girl on a bike

Riding on her KTM 450 rally replica, fondly named Big Buddy, Vanessa will start the 14-day race that will take her from Monaco to Senegal in Africa. Her most recent accomplishment was in the Morocco desert challenge, a demanding 8-day event.

Out of 77 participants in the Moto category, Vanessa was among the 40 per cent who finished every stage despite extremely harsh conditions, including peak temperatures of 52 degrees Celsius. Vanessa has also been the first female to enter and finish in certain challenging desert rallies like the Tunisia Desert Challenge.

Vanessa has personal reasons for choosing the Africa Eco race, set to take place in January 2024. Besides the rally’s reputation as one of the toughest races out there, Vanessa was drawn to its ecological and social initiatives. The race supports local communities with programs like Energy of Hope, which provides solar lamps to rural school children. “Over 2 and a half thousand lamps have been handed out so far,” Vanessa stated. The rally has also funded the planting of over 2,000 trees in the capital of Mauritania.

Vanessa also has a philanthropic angle to her racing pursuits. She is a brand ambassador for Two Wheels for Life, a charity providing healthcare mobility solutions in Africa.

I feel so fortunate to be able to explore the wonders of many parts of Africa while racing. These countries are incredible places to visit, but sadly the health care and transport infrastructure is far from ideal. By working with Two Wheels for Life I have the opportunity to give something back to the people in a part of the world where motorcycles and their effective use literally saves lives.

Through this organisation, she’s offering a chance for people to win a five-star trip to Dakar to witness the end of the race. As she gears up for the monumental challenge, Vanessa is taking on speaking engagements to raise funds. As a TEDx and award-winning motivational speaker Vanessa wants to use her story to help others grow; “I’ve broken down in tears on stage, I’ve stuttered and had to process the emotions, but in my heart I know it’s worth it… if I can turn my trauma and fight into powerful advice to help others with their life battles, then it makes what I went through worthwhile – or at least in my head it helps me process why it had to happen to me!

I don’t just want a payout to enable me to go and rally; I want to feel like I’m giving back,” she said. Vanessa can be found across all social media platforms and will be creating a full behind the scenes YouTube series of her Africa Eco Race adventures. Vanessa will also be heading to Gambia with Two Wheels for Life directly from the Dakar finish line to support the charities activities first hand. Don’t forget to get your ticket so you could win a 5-star trip to meet Vanessa in Senegal. You might win, and if you don’t, you’ll have donated to a charity doing great work.

Ross Gazette: Vanessa Ruck Explores Future of Methane-Powered Motorcycles

As seen in The Ross Gazette: Join international racing star Vanessa Ruck as she delves into the future of motorcycle fuels. In a captivating video, she introduces a groundbreaking methane-powered tractor, examining its impact on sustainable motorcycling. Explore the possibilities with ‘The Girl On A Bike.

Monmouthshire-based international racing star Vanessa Ruck takes a detour from her usual two-wheel adventures to explore the future of alternative fuels in the motorcycle world. In her recent video, Vanessa introduces a methane-powered tractor, pondering its implications for sustainable motorcycling.

Known for her daring exploits on motorcycles, Vanessa Ruck, also known as “The Girl On A Bike,” recently focused her lens on a New Holland T6 tractor. But this isn’t your ordinary tractor. “This is a methane-powered tractor, it is the first of its kind in the world,” Vanessa said. What makes this tractor extraordinary is that it runs on methane produced from agricultural waste, specifically, poop.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1wb92A5JWU

Vanessa dives into the mechanics of how this tractor could signal a shift in our approach to fuels. “What if we can capture [methane] and use it in our transportation industry?” she asks. New Holland is doing precisely that, capturing methane from farms to power their tractors. “One of the biggest waste byproduct negatives in the agricultural industry is suddenly becoming a fuel to power it,” Vanessa adds.

The tractor operates with the same brake horsepower as its diesel counterparts and uses the same Michelin tyres. Vanessa dismisses concerns over performance limitations. “The power, the performance, the output argument—out the window,” she said. Vanessa also noted that refuelling a methane tractor is faster than a diesel one, putting to rest the “range anxiety” commonly associated with alternative fuels.

The Girl on a bike methane motorcycles
The Girl on a bike methane motorcycles

The methane model costs about £10,000 more than its diesel variant. But the long-term savings could be significant. “You’re going to save about twenty thousand pounds,” Vanessa quoted from YouTube tractor expert Lord Mark, explaining that the tractor would pay for itself in about 4,500 engine hours.

Vanessa didn’t ignore the potential limitations. The tractor’s fuel availability decreases as you go up in horsepower, and the methane has to be nearly 95 per cent pure to be effective. But she concluded on a hopeful note. “There are still things in my head that’s making me wonder, could that have negative side effects as well. But I do know quite comfortably that we have methane floating around all over the place in our agricultural industry, and this seems like a really sensible way to utilise it,” she said.

While Vanessa is a fan of electric vehicles, she’s not entirely convinced that they represent the future of transportation. “My gut tells me we haven’t necessarily found the future fuel yet,” she stated. In her view, methane, a byproduct of the very system that feeds us, could be a viable alternative for the motorbike industry and beyond.
