So… Been following her exploits loosely on social media for a few years, her story struck a chord with me personally and she comes across as a very genuine and positive person to me at least.
Anyway. My IAM group organised her to come and do a talk to the group earlier this evening. She was really insightful. I don’t know that I could be so relentlessly positive as she seems to be myself, she certainly did touch on the issues of self doubt and creating goals to give herself purpose though. Some interesting stories about her experiences on the Desert rallies in Morocco, Tunisia and Qatar too…
Met her briefly at the end, she is pretty humble and genuine to be fair, though I do worry that her definition of “self preservation” is probably on a different level to most peoples… Her story of literally refusing to call time on the Rally in Tunisia despite hallucinating through dehydration whilst stuck in the desert in 48deg heat in the midday sun with a bike that had stopped working did make me question the extent to which she might be trying to prove a point to herself though…
But in a sea of disingenuous and fake social media “influencers” I feel very validated in continuing to follow her… Long may she continue to be a positive influence, and good luck to her in the Africa Eco Race (essentially the real version of the original Dakar Rally, given it finishes in Dakar and the rights to the “Dakar” were sold and that rally is now run in the Middle East) in January too.

With TEDx UK events popping up all around South Florida, the oh-so-popular event is making a comeback in Delray Beach!
In a world filled with sound bites and paparazzi-snapped photos, there are still storytellers determined to create media with meaning. From feature films to citizen journalism, their work is worth spreading. On November 4th, we will hear from some of those storytellers.
After a 10-year hiatus, Natalia Romero, Ph.D., physicist, educator and a TEDx organizer, is bringing back TEDx Delray Beach to the very heart and soul of the city’s cultural center: Old School Square.
“We aim to provide a diverse platform to present and discuss relevant topics, innovative ideas, trends and issues which currently affect our local and global community, as well as to bring light to hidden talent and local heroes.” said Dr. Romero.
Old School Square, located in the heart of downtown Delray Beach, is a National Historic Site where beautifully restored early 20th century school buildings serve the greater Delray Beach community and South Florida with visual performing arts, entertainment and enrichments programs. The award-winning, nationally recognized arts center combines historic preservation and the arts.
Serving as this year’s TEDx Delray Beach historic venue, The Fieldhouse which was once called the Vintage Gymnasium (c. 1925) hosts series of music, comedy, poetry, art and more throughout the year. Maybe there will be more TEDx UK events.
Seemingly frozen in time, the heavy wood beams still bear the markings of students who dared to climb up to scrawl their names in chalk. While the Fieldhouse is no longer used for sporting events, the original backboards remain in place and former locker rooms converted to beautifully appointed restrooms.
Delray Beach has been rapidly growing and evolving over the past decade. Now, at the verge of a global technology revolution, machine learning, large language models, and artificial intelligence are gaining a broad spectrum of applications. We are experiencing a paradigm shift – and so, the 2023 TEDx Delray Beach theme is “The Ripple Effect.”
Unlike the domino effect which only serves one direction, the ripple effect multiplies in all directions like ripples across water when an object is dropped into it. A ripple effect occurs as a progressive after shock. An initial disturbance to a system propagates to an increasingly larger portion of the system such as in society creating a “new normal” spreading from one individual to the next and into communities broadening its impact and adoption.
Coming from very diverse backgrounds and perspectives, we will hear from though leaders on a variety of topics that currently affects our local and global community. From sustainability, urban planning, astrophysics, history through storytelling, creative AI, and blockchain technology, this event promises to be a night filled with innovation, creativity, and ideas worth spreading.
“The impact community can have is like a pebble dropped in a pond, creating ripples that reach far beyond our initial actions,” said Meggie Soliman, one of this year’s TEDx Delray Beach speakers. “Together, we have the power to inspire, uplift, and transform the world.”
As a Blockchain Advocate, Director of Strategic Innovations at DSS, South Florida Tech Hub HealthTech & Life Sciences Peer Group Chair, and active South Florida Tech Hub member, Meggie is very involved in her local community and the South Florida tech ecosystem. She told Tech Hub that she is most excited about “the opportunity to share and collaborate with the community on an idea worth sharing.”
In addition to captivating speakers, TEDx Delray Beach 2023 will also feature our artistic community by inviting world-renowned artists such as the third-place World Tango Champions and inaugurating the TEDxDelrayBeach short Film/Animation competition.
TEDx is a grassroots initiative, created in the spirit of TED’s overall mission to research and discover “ideas worth spreading.” TEDx brings the spirit of TED to local communities around the globe through TEDx events. According to TED.com, the TED organization, which stands for Technology Education and Design, hosts more than 3,000 TEDx events annually. These events are organized by passionate individuals who seek to uncover new ideas and to share the latest research in their local areas that spark conversations in their communities.
TEDx events include live speakers and recorded TED Talks, and are organized independently under a free license granted by TED. These events are not controlled by TED, but event organizers agree to abide by our format, and are offered guidelines for curation, speaker coaching, event organizing and more. They learn from us and from each other. More than 3000 events are now held annually.
Since 1984, Ted Talks have created podcasts and videos by expert speakers on education, business, science, tech and creativity. TEDx encourages communities to come together in a platform that showcases local thinkers and innovators. Some of the TEDx videos may be chosen to become regular Ted Talks.

As seen in The Monmouthshire Beacon: Follow Vanessa Ruck’s journey from roadbook rookie to desert rally enthusiast. Join ‘The Girl On A Bike’ as she tackles the Africa Eco race and inspires with philanthropy.
Monmouthshire racer, Vanessa Ruck, also known as ‘The Girl On A Bike,’ announces her entry into the Africa Eco race, highlighting her journey and philanthropic endeavours. Vanessa has evolved from a roadbook rookie to a desert rally addict, completing eight international desert rallies and aiming for her most challenging race yet.
Riding on her KTM 450 rally replica, fondly named Big Buddy, Vanessa took to her YouTube channel to share her journey in the realm of desert rally racing. “I braved the desert for the first time just 19 months ago,” she said, adding that her passion lies in roadbook navigation and rallying. Vanessa has also been the first female to enter and finish in certain challenging desert rallies like the Tunisia desert challenge.
Her most recent accomplishment was in the Morocco desert challenge, a demanding 8-day event. Out of 77 participants in the Moto category, Vanessa was among the 40 per cent who finished every stage despite extremely harsh conditions, including peak temperatures of 52 degrees Celsius.
Vanessa also provided insights into the reasons for choosing the Africa Eco race, set to take place in January 2024. Besides the rally’s reputation, Vanessa was drawn to its ecological and social initiatives. The race supports local communities with programs like Energy of Hope, which provides solar lamps to rural school children. “Over 2 and a half thousand lamps have been handed out so far,” Vanessa stated. The rally has also funded the planting of over 2,000 trees in the capital of Mauritania.
In terms of safety, Vanessa emphasised that the Africa Eco race has robust measures in place, including multiple helicopters and 4×4 vehicles, as well as over 20 doctors.
Vanessa also has a philanthropic angle to her racing pursuits. She is a brand ambassador for Two Wheels for Life, a charity providing healthcare mobility solutions in Africa. Through this organisation, she’s offering a chance for people to win a five-star trip to Dakar to witness the end of the race.
As she gears up for the monumental challenge, Vanessa is taking on speaking engagements to raise funds. “I don’t just want a payout to enable me to go and do the rally; I want to feel like I’m giving back,” she said. Vanessa ended her announcement with words of gratitude for her supporters and a promise for a full YouTube series documenting her Africa Eco race journey.

Vanessa lives and manages chronic pain following a cycling road traffic accident in 2014, adding to the challenges she’ll face racing 6,500km to the infamous Dakar.

In celebration of International Women’s Day 2022 and women around the world – we thought we would highlight some of the most empowering female motorcyclists you should keep track of (pun intended) on Instagram. Here’s our favourite motorbike riders you should follow.
Born in Slovakia and raised in Greece, Dominika bought her first bike in 2016 after believing she would never ride one due to social gender norms.
In 2017, she had her first race where she was invited by ITV4 to compete in the DirtQuakeFlat Track Race in Adrian Flux Arena, and won Second Place in the ladies class with a Yamaha XT250.
Born and raised in London, Vanessa has built her brand on the goal of making the most out of her life and helping others do the same. After getting into a bicycle accident that left Vanessa unable to cycle to work, it led her to pursue motorcycling and thus birthed the beginning of ‘The Girl On A Bike’.
Making an effort to share both the good and the bad days, Vanessa embodies transparency with her audience to dismantle the “too perfect” and unrealistic bounds of social media.
Her love for motorbikes has taken her all over the world from Bolivia, Ukraine, Sardinia, to Iceland; sharing her journey online to prove that anyone can get up and enjoy life on two wheels and normalising girls on motorbikes.

As seen in The Monmouthshire Beacon: Vanessa Ruck & Alex Ruck make history on Harley-Davidson at HAT Adventour, becoming Extreme category pioneers in just 40 hours.
‘GIRL On A Bike’ Vanessa Ruck and her husband Alex have become the first riders ever to complete the Extreme category of Europe’s largest Adventour event, the HAT Sanremo-Sestriere.
The Monmouth couple rode Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 Special motorcycles and finished the gruelling challenge in just 40 hours.
The HAT Sanremo-Sestriere is a non-competitive off-road challenge now in its 15th year.
The event, which took place from 8-10 September, started in the northwestern Italian city of Sanremo and ended at Sestriere in the Italian Alps.
Vanessa, known on social media as ‘The Girl On A Bike,’ and Alex were part of a team of three that included their friend Anika.
They faced an arduous 780km off-road course through varying conditions, from hot and dusty trails to cold, rocky terrains.
Vanessa expressed her excitement about the feat, saying: “We literally turned up at the event, signed on, set the Pan America semi-active suspension into off-road mode, strapped on sleeping bags and other necessities, and set off at 11:30pm on Friday night.
“After 35 hours riding and just 5 hours broken sleep, we did it! I can’t describe how good it felt to arrive at Sestriere.”
The motorcycles they used for this challenging journey were standard Pan America 1250 Special models, equipped with factory option accessories like H-D wire-laced wheel rims, Daymaker Led auxiliary lights, Michelin Anakee Wild off-road tyres, and the award-winning Adaptive Ride Height system.
The Pan America motorcycle, since its 2021 launch, has been recognised for its ruggedness, power, and advanced technology.
Interested riders from the UK and Ireland can test the Pan America at authorised Harley-Davidson dealerships.
Those completing a test ride before 1 December 2023 will be entered into a prize draw to win a Pan America 1250 Special and a day at the Harley-Davidson Adventure Centre with Mick Extance, according to terms and conditions.
