I went to Tasmania expecting a brilliant motorcycle trip. I came away calling it my favourite place I’d ever ridden. That’s a big statement, but the variety of riding packed into this island completely blew me away.
In this video, I share what made the trip with Ultimate Cape Escape so special: forest tracks, technical climbs, sand dunes, beaches, quiet roads and the feeling of being properly out in the wilderness.
Our route covered roughly 1,800 km around the island, and trying to list every type of terrain we encountered became a challenge of its own. Gravel roads, muddy tracks, rocky climbs, granite slabs, forest trails, dunes and beautiful tarmac all made an appearance.
It’s the variety that really stands out. You can go from mountains and forest towards the coast in a single day, without the riding ever feeling repetitive. Tasmania may look compact on a map, but it certainly doesn’t feel small when you’re out in the bush.
Even the road sections were memorable. We rode through gum trees and rainforest, past rocks and coastline, with far less traffic than I’m used to at home. On the Husqvarna 501, linking the trails together was part of the enjoyment rather than something to get out of the way.
Away from the roads, there were stretches where the group felt completely immersed in the landscape. That sense of space was a huge part of why I loved the trip.
The beach riding was a highlight. Soft sand, dunes and hill climbs brought back the desert-rally itch. If sand is something you find tricky, I filmed a separate guide to riding a motorcycle in sand during this trip.
Access varies by location, so use the designated riding areas and check the current local requirements rather than assuming every beach or trail is open. Tasmania Parks and Wildlife’s off-road vehicle guidance is a useful starting point for checking access, permits and local advice.
We went from bright sunshine to rain, and I soon appreciated having layers, warmth and waterproofs with me. In the video, you’ll see me wrapped up as the weather changes on the west coast.
I enjoyed riding here in March. That’s the timing of my experience, rather than a promise of the same conditions for every trip. Talk through the season and expected weather with your operator when planning your own adventure.
There’s plenty to take in when you stop the engine too. Forest, coastal views and wildlife all become part of the journey. I was ridiculously excited at the prospect of seeing wallabies and kangaroos, although the riders who live here were quick to remind me that you don’t want one jumping out in front of your bike.
And the food deserves a mention. Fresh local produce, seafood and a curried scallop pie all added to the experience. I also talk about Tasmania’s whisky, although during the riding day I was very happy with a hot chocolate.
I rode with Ultimate Cape Escape, with local knowledge making a huge difference to the routes and the experience. On my trip, the setup included Husqvarna 501s, luggage support, accommodation, food and plenty of snacks. Check the operator’s current itinerary and inclusions for the trip you’re considering.
The riding we did was intermediate to advanced, with technical sections and long days. It asked for fitness as well as riding ability. Be honest about the riding you’re comfortable with when discussing a tour: the right challenge makes the experience much more enjoyable.
In the video I discuss flying via mainland Australia and the option of bringing a vehicle by ferry. For current travel planning, Spirit of Tasmania sails between Geelong in Victoria and Devonport in Tasmania. Check the official terminal information and sailing schedule before booking; timetables and arrangements can change.
I used Holafly while travelling in Australia and Tasmania. If you’re considering an eSIM, my Holafly code TheGirlOnABike gives 5% off. Check the plan’s compatibility, coverage and terms for your route, especially in remote areas. You can read more about my Holafly experience here.
Holafly is a partner of mine, and I may receive a commission when you use my code, at no additional cost to you.
For me, this trip went straight to the top of the list. Watch the video and tell me in the comments whether Tasmania is on your bucket list, or what you loved if you’ve already been. You can explore more trips in my motorcycle adventures section.
