Monmouthshire Beacon: Vanessa & Alex Ruck Triumph in 40-Hour HAT Adventour on Harley-Davidson

As seen in The Monmouthshire Beacon: Vanessa Ruck & Alex Ruck make history on Harley-Davidson at HAT Adventour, becoming Extreme category pioneers in just 40 hours.

‘GIRL On A Bike’ Vanessa Ruck and her husband Alex have become the first riders ever to complete the Extreme category of Europe’s largest Adventour event, the HAT Sanremo-Sestriere.

The Monmouth couple rode Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 Special motorcycles and finished the gruelling challenge in just 40 hours.

The HAT Sanremo-Sestriere is a non-competitive off-road challenge now in its 15th year.

Vanessa Ruck and husband HAT Adventour

The event, which took place from 8-10 September, started in the northwestern Italian city of Sanremo and ended at Sestriere in the Italian Alps.

Vanessa, known on social media as ‘The Girl On A Bike,’ and Alex were part of a team of three that included their friend Anika.

They faced an arduous 780km off-road course through varying conditions, from hot and dusty trails to cold, rocky terrains.

Vanessa expressed her excitement about the feat, saying: “We literally turned up at the event, signed on, set the Pan America semi-active suspension into off-road mode, strapped on sleeping bags and other necessities, and set off at 11:30pm on Friday night.

“After 35 hours riding and just 5 hours broken sleep, we did it! I can’t describe how good it felt to arrive at Sestriere.”

The motorcycles they used for this challenging journey were standard Pan America 1250 Special models, equipped with factory option accessories like H-D wire-laced wheel rims, Daymaker Led auxiliary lights, Michelin Anakee Wild off-road tyres, and the award-winning Adaptive Ride Height system.

The Pan America motorcycle, since its 2021 launch, has been recognised for its ruggedness, power, and advanced technology.

Interested riders from the UK and Ireland can test the Pan America at authorised Harley-Davidson dealerships.

Those completing a test ride before 1 December 2023 will be entered into a prize draw to win a Pan America 1250 Special and a day at the Harley-Davidson Adventure Centre with Mick Extance, according to terms and conditions.

Visor Down: Women in Moto Reshaping UK Motorcycling

As seen in The Visor Down: Discover how Women in Moto are breaking barriers and boosting female motorcyclists in the UK. Join the movement for change!

The Women in Moto show that took place a few weeks ago at Uttoxeter Racecourse is a particular event in that it is specifically aimed at women – a particularly small segment of the motorcycling community.

female riders

In fact, UK government data shows that 13 percent of motorcyclists in the country were females between 2002 and 2022. Although this percentage rose and fell over the course of that 20-year period, it never exceeded 14 percent, but was also never less than 13 percent.

Either way, it doesn’t take much more to work out that finding motorcycling women in the UK is not straightforward, but it is one area which, in some aspects, is looking to encourage more women to become involved in it, and

Many female riders are looking to change this, working to dismantle some of the barriers they found on their own two-wheeled journey, making things easier for those following in their footsteps.

Lindsay Atkinson – the organiser of the Women in Moto show who began riding in the early 2010s with a Vespa to overcome the issue of waiting for public transport in London – explained that the problem is not as simple as women being told by men that they should not or cannot ride motorcycles, for example, but it is also fundamental to the structure of the motorcycle industry, built on its own century-old, male-dominated past.

UK motorcycling

Motorcycles have generally been built by men, and generally built for men. That affects parameters based on size, weight, ergonomics, visuals, purpose, and much more. Aside from the motorcycle itself, it also affects how it is marketed, an the attitude of the motorcycle manufacturers is of course

mirrored by the companies which produce the accessories and gear for the people who own and ride the products of those manufacturers.

I think that there are a lot of manufacturers out there that aren’t yet clued up to the fact that women are their future target market,” said Atkinson. “So, a lot of manufacturers are still creating absolutely huge bikes that often are harder for a shorter, female rider to touch the floor on, they’re often really heavy and really hard to pick up.

Motor Cycle Mojo: The Girl On A Bike, An Inspiring Journey

As seen in The Motor Cycle Mojo: Discover Vanessa Ruck’s incredible journey from mental health challenges to motorcycle racing. Her story will inspire you to overcome any obstacle in life.

I love people with strength, positive drive, goals and energy. I recently met one such person, Vanessa Ruck. Otherwise known as The Girl On A Bike, she’s a 36-year-old motorcycle rider, racer, adventurer, presenter, social media influencer and motivational speaker. In 2022, she also made history on her stock Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro as the first woman on an adventure motorcycle to finish the 1000 Dunas Rally, held in Spain and Morocco.

However, it’s not just her current badassery that makes her fascinating, but also her deeply personal story of grit, determination, mental health crises, pain, physical recovery, and how she ended up as a motorcycle rider in the first place that is truly inspirational.

Born and raised in England, Vanessa is a self-proclaimed go-getter and chase-vour-dreams kind of girl. A lover of the outdoors, getting muddy, and pushing herself to succeed, she has participated in various adrenaline-pumping sports like kitesurfing, wakeboarding, horse riding, rock climbing, cycling, snowboarding and mountain biking.

But her life took a drastic turn one day in March, 2014, when she was hit by a car that went through a red light while bicycling. She considered herself lucky to be alive that fateful day, after being discharged from the hospital with what she was told was simple “bruising.”

Seven years and seven surgeries later, she’s on an entirely new path, with a fully reconstructed hip and right shoulder, chronic pain, and a rollercoaster ride of emotions tied to a long and draining recovery process.

The girl on a bike the accident hip surgery 2

It was a dark and exhausting time when she struggled to see any point in life. She was diagnosed with multiple disorders, including depression, fear of the road, and adjustment disorder.
“My recovery was pretty brutal physically,” she says, “but mentally, it i was far, far harder.”

The burning adrenaline junky inside of Vanessa never left, though.

Determined to get back to sports, she faced the struggle of comparison: how good she used to be with how she would have to be now. As a wedding anniversary present for her and her husband, Alex, Vanessa rented a pair of Harleys.

She immediately loved the wind in her hair and the feeling of freedom. The Harley was comfortable, with a seat position that didn’t hurt her hip, and steering that her shoulder could handle. It became a new way to adventure, and she loved it.

“I quickly realized that I needed that bike in my life,” she explains.
“Motorcycles [for fun, not commuting] were a completely new thing after the accident. Riding made me feel alive.”

The accident gave Vanessa a massive reality check on what is important in life, and it altered her sense of gratitude and appreciation. It made her massively determined to take advantage of every day. “I realized how hugely lucky we are to wake up in the morning, get out of bed, put our socks on, and go to the toilet on our own.” she says. “All those little things you normally take for granted.

Riding came at a time when I needed something. I didn’t have anything, and I was broken.”

Then, while bed-bound from her third surgery, Vanessa decided she also wanted a dirt bike. Her husband was supportive, even though it would be several months before she could sit on 12 MOTORCYCLE MOJO SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2023 one. “Surround yourself with people who believe in you and support your crazy ideas,” she says smiling.

Since then, Vanessa has ridden in 28 countries, and has competed in some of the world’s most extreme races, such as the Romaniacs and Rally du Maroc, and she was the first woman to enter the
1000 Tunisia Desert Challenge. She’ll also be racing the Bowler Defender Rallv Car Series this year, her first-ever competition in a car. She is also a keynote speaker at multiple events, including last June at the Adventure Bike Rider Festival in the U.K.

In December, Vanessa will compete in the Africa Eco Race, an annual 14-day, 6,500 km rally in North and West Africa. “I’m nervous about this one,” she says. “They are the most disgustingly horrific events you can possibly put yourself through, yet somehow, I just keep signing up for more.”

Vanessa certainly didn’t get on that dirt bike seven years ago believing she would compete in some of the hardes: rallies in the world. “I would have laughed in your face if you told me that!” she says. “But I ride because I feel so alive when I’m out there on a bike. I am so mentally and physically engaged that there is no time for anything else. The pain will hit me like : a freight train when I get off the bike, but the whole time I’m racing, I’m just alive and in it, and it’s unbelievably addictive.”

The Checkered Flag: Masahito Watanabe, Masahiro Ozeki bring Ural Gear Up to AXCR

As seen in The Checkered Flag: Follow The Checkered Flag as Watanabe and Ozeki tackle AXCR with Ural Gear Up, facing challenges in this unique sidecar adventure.

Cross-country rallies are long and arduous adventures, so one has to hope their steed can complete the trip. While your average rally raider races on four wheels in a car and quad or two wheels via bike, Masahito Watanabe and Masahiro Ozeki decided to buck the trend for this week’s Asia Cross Country Rally by showing up with three wheels.

Watanabe and Ozeki are racing together on an Ural Gear Up, a sidecar motorcycle manufacturered by IMZ-Ural. The effort comes under the Rising Sun Racing banner with support from the Japan Racing Sidecar Association, which sanctions sidecar pavement racing but has also backed AXCR entries since 2017.

Their Ural Gear Up has a 750cc air-cooled flat engine with two cylinders. It is a two-wheel-drive bike with the drive coming from the attached sidecar.

In 2022, the Watanabe/Ozeki duo received a thirteen-hour penalty in the first stage that prevented them from gaining any ground for the rest of the race. Tetsuo Iwamoto and Takeshi Sakamoto won the sidecar class in another Ural. Although not racing for 2023, Iwamoto is working with Watanabe and Ozeki as a mechanic.

While they are grouped together in the overall classification with the twenty-one bikes, Watanabe and Ozeki are considered part of a separate Sidecar category.

After two days, the team has already experienced a spate of misfortunes. They rolled their sidecar on the first leg afer hitting a piece of concrete hidden in bushes, causing Watanabe to hit his head on the ground while Ozeki hurt his knee. While both were not seriously injured and continued, Stage #2 brought more trouble when they got stuck in the sand after spinning the rear wheels, damaging the clutch plate and necessitating more repairs.

Despite their difficulties, the team remains in the race. After two stages, they sit fifteenth overall.

Even if overshadowed by their two-wheeled counterparts, sidecars have somewhat of a history in rally raid especially at the legendary Dakar Rally during its infancy. However, only two sidecar teams officially completed the Paris–Dakar: Ronny Renders and Herman Verboven finished twenty-fifth on an EML/Suzuki 1000cc in 1983, while Daniel Mocquart and Marc Fèvre on their Suzuki GSX 1100 ran out of time the following year but was classified anyway in fifty-third. In 2022, Vanessa and Alex Ruck raced the O Nosso Dakar adventure rally in Portugal on an Ural Gear Up, completing the event’s full course despite sidecars being allowed to take detours.
